What are horns and antlers used for? What kinds of animals have horns and antlers?
Horns Antlers What are they made of?
Keratin (CARE-uh-tin) - The same substance as hair, nails, and claws. The keratin sheath covers a bony core. / Bone
While they grow, the antlers are covered with skin and fuzzy fur called “velvet.”
Who has them?
Both males and females can have horns. / Males have antlers, but exceptions exist.
In caribou / reindeer, females have antlers and retain them through the winter to protect their food sources.
How long does the animal keep them?
Horns continue to grow throughout the animal’s lifetime, like hair or fingernails. / Antlers are shed each year, and re-grow each year.
